by Raymond de Thomas de Saint-Laurent, The Book of Confidence

The Confident Prayer Obtains Everything

The prayer of confidence is always heeded. It cannot be too often repeated; the prayer of those who trust in God obtains everything.

With strongly emphasized persistence, the Sacred Scriptures recommend us to stir up our faith when we present our humble petitions to God. Our Lord declares, “And all things whatsoever you shall ask in prayer, believing, you shall receive.”

The Apostle Saint James uses the same language; he will have us ask “in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea, which is moved and carried about by the wind. Therefore let not that man think that he shall receive anything from the Lord.”

Now, then, of what faith do the previous passages refer? Not of that habitual faith infused into our souls by baptism, but certainly of that special confidence which causes us to hope firmly in the intervention of Providence in some given circumstance.

Our Lord, in the Gospel, says this explicitly: “Therefore I say unto you, all things, whatsoever you ask when ye pray, believe that you shall receive; and they shall come to you.”

The Divine Master could not have defined confidence more clearly. We can have a lively faith, and, nevertheless, doubt that God wishes to favorably accept this or that petition of ours. Are we by any chance certain, for example, that the object of our desire corresponds with the true good of our life? And so we hesitate.

This simple hesitation, notes a theologian, diminishes the efficacy of the prayer.

On other occasions, on the contrary, an intimate certainty fortifies us to the point of completely repelling every doubt or hesitation. We are so certain of being heeded that it already appears to us that we have in our hands the grace for which we are seeking.

“In view of such great confidence,” writes Father Pesch, “God grants us graces that, without this, He would not have given.”

Indeed, the good that we are asking from Him was not a necessary one; or this good did not fulfil conditions that would oblige God, by virtue of His promise, to give it to us. Most of the time, however, this intimate certainty is the work of grace within us.

“For this reason,” concludes the author, “a singular confidence that we will obtain this or that blessing is a kind of special promise that God makes to us that He will grant it to us.

We shall sum up this brief digression by the following words of St. Thomas Aquinas: “Prayer,” says the Angelic Doctor, “derives its merit from charity; but its imperative efficacy comes from faith and confidence.”

Punctuality exacts self-discipline and detachment; it often asks us to interrupt some interesting, pleasant work in order to give ourselves to another kind, perhaps less attractive or less important.
However, it would be a great mistake to esteem our duties and to dedicate ourselves to them according to the attraction we have for them or according to their more or less apparent importance.
All is important and beautiful when it is the expression of the will of God, and the soul who wishes to live in this hole he will every minute of the day, will never omit the slightest act prescribed by its rule of life. -Divine Intimacy

Brother Lawrence was a man of humble beginnings who discovered the greatest secret of living in the kingdom of God here on earth. It is the art of “practicing the presence of God in one single act that does not end.” He often stated that it is God who paints Himself in the depths of our souls. We must merely open our hearts to receive Him and His loving presence.
As a humble cook, Brother Lawrence learned an important lesson through each daily chore: The time he spent in communion with the Lord should be the same, whether he was bustling around in the kitchen—with several people asking questions at the same time—or on his knees in prayer. He learned to cultivate the deep presence of God so thoroughly in his own heart that he was able to joyfully exclaim, “I am doing now what I will do for all eternity. I am blessing God, praising Him, adoring Him, and loving Him with all my heart.”
This unparalleled classic has given both blessing and instruction to those who can be content with nothing less than knowing God in all His majesty and feeling His loving presence throughout each simple day.
