The Things That Matter—and The Things That Don’t ~ Charlotte Siems

I think we all could take a step back…and we do when we or someone we love goes through some kind of crisis….and take stock of what we have deemed important up to that point. Adjustments are made and then forgotten. In the busy-ness of our lives, we fail to remember.
Charlotte Siems reminds us…

Painting by Marcel Marlier (Belgian)

There are things that matter and we think they don’t.

There are things that don’t matter much and we think they do.

It’s not that we purposely set out to ignore important things or elevate unimportant things. We just get busy and busier. Before we know it there’s a skewed sense of priorities.

We forget what we’ll wish we’d done when we’re fifty-three or seventy-two.

In the daily-ness of wiping noses and grocery shopping and genuine exhaustion we somehow lose the vision. We forget what we’ll be glad we did when we’re drawing our last breaths. Or sitting at the bedside of a loved one drawing theirs.

There’s nothing like a crisis to help us sort out which is which. I’m grateful that we’re not in a season of crisis. But watching Facebook acquaintances walk through the valley of the shadow of cancer and the death of children has given me a little shot of perspective lately.

And speaking of perspective, here’s a personal, off-the-top-of-my-head, short list of things that matter:

  • Hugs
  • Changing diapers with love rather than impatience, even when the diaper wearer is three years old
  • Paying attention to my husband and thinking about him during the day
  • Speaking well of my children to others, especially when those children can overhear
  • Oohing and aahing over Lego creations and stick drawings and dandelions clutched in a sweaty little fist
  • Making the effort to make holidays special, even the small ones (*My note ~ making feast days special…even the small ones)
  • Helping people feel special on their birthday
  • Being kind to bedwetters

Things that don’t matter much:

  • Watching other people live life on TV and Pinterest instead of living my own
  • Impressing other homeschool moms with my children’s accomplishments
  • Complaining about how I feel
  • Letting how I feel determine how hard I try to treat others well
  • Fingerprints on doorframes and refrigerators
  • Finishing workbooks and perfecting handwriting at the cost of personal relationships
  • Constantly pushing children with what they need to do better rather than encouraging them with what they do well
  • Ignoring my husband, figuring he’s a big boy

The lists could go on, of course. If you think of something to add, please do.

The wisdom and training you give to your child will determine the outcome. It is not the time to give in to weariness, indifference, laziness or careless neglect. Their souls are in your hands. ~Finer Femininity (Painting by Tasha Tudor)

Meet Saint John, a little fellow with a huge heart, who did ALL FOR THE GLORY OF GOD and learned to love Him enormously! Being different from others is never easy. Saint John the Dwarf, of all people, could tell you that! Forever standing on chairs to reach things, unable to play games with other children because of his size, and being teased by the village bullies were all hard things to bear, and could have made John bitter and full of self-pity. But John discovered a secret – a great BIG secret – which changed his life and turned him into a giant of a saint. Join Little John on his adventures – from his home to a desert cave, to the altar and beyond – and let him teach you his secret of holiness too! With charming full-color illustrations and easy-to-read text, this first book in Susan Peek’s new series for children (companion to her series for teens, “God’s Forgotten Friends: Lives of Little-known Saints”) is sure to capture the hearts of Catholic children everywhere.

A new historical novel about the unusual life of King Baldwin IV of Jerusalem, the leper crusader king who – despite ascending to the throne at only 13, his early death at 24 and his debilitating disease – performed great and heroic deeds in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds. Teenagers and avid readers of all ages will be amazed at this story and be inspired by a faith that accomplished the impossible!

🌺🌸 The Little Flower’s Tidbits on Holy Communion 🌺🌸

13 Sunday Nov 2022

The following tidbits are taken from this lovely, old “Little Flower Prayer Book” of my mother’s…..

This was Mom’s beautiful (and much used) Little Flower Prayer Book that she had for many years.
It has all sorts of notes throughout, post-it notes, holy cards, etc. As you can see by this page at the back Mom wrote some of the novenas she had done for her family. One of the novenas she said a Hail Mary for 240 days….and she did that one for each of her siblings, her children and grandchildren.
It was a fluke I found this book. And when I did, I was happy to find this note in the front.

St. Therese:

How sweet it was, the first kiss of Jesus to my soul! Yes, it was a kiss of Love. I felt I was loved, and I too said: “I love Thee, I give myself to Thee forever!”

Jesus asked nothing of me, demanded no sacrifice. Already for a long time past, He and the little Therese had watched and understood one another . . .

That day our meeting was no longer a simple look but a fusion. No longer were we two: Therese had disappeared as the drop of water which loses itself in the depths of the ocean, Jesus alone remained; the Master, the King!

Had not Therese begged Him to take away from her, her liberty? That liberty made her afraid; so weak, so fragile did she feel herself that she longed to be united for ever to Divine Strength.

I had taken as my rule of conduct, to receive most faithfully Holy Communion as often as my confessor permitted, without ever asking that it might be more frequent.

I would act differently now; for I am quite sure that a soul ought to make known to her director the attraction that she feels to receive her God.

It is not to remain in a golden ciborium that He comes down each day from Heaven, but to find another Heaven, the Heaven of our soul in which He takes his delight.

What shall I say of my thanksgivings after Holy Communion? There are no moments in which I feel less consolation. And is not this very natural, seeing that my desire is to receive our Lord’s visit, not for my own satisfaction, but solely for His pleasure.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is border-3.png

I imagine my soul to be as a plot of waste ground and beg the Blessed Virgin to remove from it all the rubbish—meaning its imperfections; then I beseech her to erect thereon a vast canopy worthy of Heaven and to decorate it with her own treasures, and I invite all the Angels and Saints to come and sing canticles of love.

It seems to me then that Jesus is pleased to see Himself so magnificently received; and I, I share His joy. All this does not hinder distractions and sleep from molesting me; therefore it not rarely happens that I resolve to continue my thanksgiving all the day long, since I have made it so badly in the Choir.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is border-3.png

At the time of Holy Communion I sometimes picture my soul under the figure of a little child of three or four years, who at play has got its hair tossed and its clothes soiled.—

These misfortunes have befallen me in battling with souls.—But very soon the Blessed Virgin hastens to my aid: quickly she takes off my little dirty pinafore, smooths my hair and adorns it with a pretty ribbon or simply with a little flower . . . and this suffices to render me pleasing and enables me to sit at the Banquet of Angels without blushing.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is border-3.png

The demon, traitor that he is, knows well, that he cannot make a soul who wills to belong wholly to the good God, commit sin; therefore he endeavors only to persuade her that she sins. That is a great deal gained, but it is not yet enough to satisfy his rage; he aims at something further, he wants to deprive Jesus of a loved tabernacle.

Not being able himself to enter into this sanctuary he wishes that it may at least remain empty and without its Lord.

Alas! what will become of this poor heart? . . . When the devil has succeeded in driving away a soul from Holy Communion he has gained his ends, and Jesus weeps . . .

A novice relates that she wanted to deprive herself of Holy Communion because of some lack of fidelity.

She wrote her determination to Sister Therese of the Child Jesus who thus replied: “Little flower cherished by Jesus, it is amply sufficient that by the humiliation of your soul, your roots eat of the earth . . . You must open a little, or rather raise on high your corolla so that the Bread of Angels may come as a divine dew to strengthen you, and to give you all that is wanting to you.”

Goodnight, poor little floweret; ask of Jesus that all the prayers offered for my recovery may serve to augment the fire which must consume me.”

“Love and sacrifice is thus as closely connected as the sun and the light. You can’t love without suffering and suffer without loving. It is with sacrifice that so confirms love “. – Santa Gianna Beretta Molla
Painting by Hermann Kaulbach (1846 – 1909, German)

Excellent sermon! Lukewarmness is the enemy of fervent souls. ” Being lukewarm is a spiritual disease, where one gradually slips from fervor due to a lessening of effort in prayer and other crucial acts of piety. If he doesn’t correct this, he will prepare himself for mortal sin. The best remedy against lukewarmness is (i) devotion to Blessed Mary, (ii) obey a good spiritual director and (iii) recommit to the duties of ones state of life.”

Are you hungry to learn? Do you want to grow in your faith and improve in your vocation?

Me, too! And I am hungry to have my children learn! Any help I can get I am grateful for and so I feel very blessed to have such an availability of the many resources on the web for Catholics to learn about the Faith!

There are snippets of time which are wasted that we could use to grow spiritually by listening to something…. a sermon, a podcast or a conference on apologetics… that would help us become a better Catholic, help us to better answer others who are searching for the truth or just to give us a lift, some inspiration for our own vocation and our own lives!

So…gather around and give a listen, just like the good old days!

index

We can listen to our favorite sermons while folding clothes (one of my own favorite times), or at homeschool “recess time” (we get out our crafts and listen), or on our way to daily Mass (I invested in a wireless speaker for my phone), etc.

We also gather most Mondays, with a bunch of the youth around here, to pray the rosary and listen to a sermon. I am inspired by the amount of young people who take part in this! Lately we have been praying and listening outside with nature enveloping us…..also with irritating flies, hungry mosquitoes and a couple of playful puppies and, of course, playful children!. No matter, it’s still good to get outside!

img_5457

img_5672 img_5677

Don’t underestimate the power of this type of learning!! And it is so readily available.

I remember well a great man and positive motivational speaker saying that he learned much from listening to audios and that we need to use every chance we get to be learning and growing through this medium (because we can do it while doing something else that doesn’t take brain work)…..especially in our vehicles on those drives where we have some stretches of time. He called our vehicles “Rolling Universities”!

We don’t realize the time we fritter away that we could be using.

I wanted to share these with you so if you are ever at a loss on where to turn for good information, you will have many things to choose from right here.

These are the resources I use:

**************************************************************

This first site is called Sensus Traditionis and it is by Father Ripperger. The tagline of the site is “A Website Dedicated to the Sacred Tradition of the Roman Catholic Church”. You can read his mission statement here.

Father is practical, balanced and thoroughly orthodox. His audios are here.

*****************************************************************

This is a great audio site called Luke 11:28! Once again, the priest is dedicated to Tradition within the Fold of the Catholic Church. You will love his sermons! They can be found here.

*****************************************************************

Romans 10:17! This priest is amazing! You will gather much from his sermons. We have been listening to him for years. His site is here.

One of our favorite sermons by him is “Holy Families Don’t Just Happen”

Another one is “Company-Keeping”.

*****************************************************************

I am not familiar with this particular site but when I went to go on a site we have listened to a lot in the past, it was no longer available. They pointed me to this one called Regina Prophetarum, Traditional Sermons for Traditional Catholics.

So I am supposing it has a lot of the same sermons we have listened to.

From their site: In their oath of fidelity, each of these priests promised, in part, to “preserve the Deposit of the Faith in its entirety, hand it on faithfully, and make it shine forth,” and “whatsoever teachings are contrary, I shall shun.” This has been a great motivator for them in the composing and delivering of the sermons placed under the patronage of Regina Prophetarum (the Queen of Prophets).

The link is here.

*****************************************************************

This is a channel on YouTube that I have used occasionally. There is a lot available on here! It is called Sensus Fidelium. Check it out here.

*****************************************************************

Apologetics!! This is a great website to learn about your Faith, to be able to answer the hard questions that Protestants may have, etc. You learn about how to answer things like:

Why do you pray to Mary?

Why do you believe that Christ is truly present in the Eucharist? How can you prove it?

What makes you think your Church is the only True Church?

Faith alone is enough. How can you say that we need works along with Faith?

Etc., etc.  The link is here.

We use this resource a lot for Legion of Mary purposes.

****************************************************************

Your Relationship!

The following link is the podcast link to Love and Respect Ministries. These are excellent podcasts for those wishing to grow in their relationship with their spouse! Keep in mind that they are Protestant. There are some I don’t listen to because it touches more on the spiritual side of things. But the podcasts on the relationships are very good! You will gain much from them if you approach it with an open heart! Be prepared to make some changes and see some changes!

The link is here.

You can also download the Podcast app on your phone and search for Love and Respect on it.

*****************************************************************

Story Time!

I just found this one and am very excited about!! It is for you mothers! It has so many great stories for your children to listen to! These are good, old Catholic stories that I have read to my own children when they were young. Here they are on Audio!! Just set your kids down and have them listen. They are great!

This one is not a site, though, it is an App called Audio Catholic Kids. You will have to download the App on your phone and hook it up to a speaker. I know that is maybe a little more techy than you may be used to but you might want to figure it out….if you have a smart phone.

The link for Androids is here.

For iphones it is here.

*******************************************************************

Remember, you become like the people you associate with. Why would you not want to rub shoulders with these zealous and wonderful priests and lay people? Absorb what they have to offer and become humble, holier and happier!

******************************************************************

finer fem quote for the day fall

“It is ridiculous if he who professes to be a Christian is unable to utter a word in defense of his own faith…It is this that prevents the pagans from quickly realizing the absurdity of their error. Inasmuch as, relying on falsehood, they make every effort to obscure the baseness of their teachings, while we who are the guardians of truth cannot even open our mouth, what will prevent them from despising the great weakness of our doctrine? Will they not get the idea that our teaching is deceitful and foolish? Will they not blaspheme Christ as a dissembler and deceiver who makes us of the stupidity of the majority to advance his deceit? And we are responsible for this blasphemy if we are not willing to be on the alert to speak in defense of righteousness, but rate such matters as superfluous, and concern ourselves about the things of earth.” -St. John Chrysostom

I have some very special Grandchildren…. What grandparents don’t think that, right?

Virginia (our oldest daughter) and Vincent have 6 children.  Edward is the oldest and he is 7. Her hands are full.

Virginia has told me of the few mornings she has woken up after the kids were already up. Edward had efficiently set the table, each of the kids were in their places with Emma in the high chair, devouring the cereal and milk that had been neatly poured into their bowls!

These are pictures of her second oldest son, Antonio, who is 6. They show a lot about his personality…..ambitious, hungry and impatient!! 😀IMG_3693 IMG_3692IMG_3690IMG_3694

                                               🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻

Who says God is not concerned with the little things in our lives? I was taking a look at our bathroom and whispered a little prayer to Our Lady, “Could you please take care of this room for me?”

The room needed desperate help and my guys are awfully busy making a living around here. Shortly after that prayer my son-in-law, Mike, and my son, Dominic, decided that they would take a couple hours out of their day and paint my bathroom (I didn’t ask them, nor did I mention my prayer).

They painted the room, and the next day I saw my son trek through the house with a box of new ceramic tile…..my eyebrows raised as I saw him and I started to get *cautiously* excited! One thing led to another and next thing you know my whole bathroom was remodeled!!! Wow! Did Our Lady answer that prayer or what???? If she is concerned with the small things, will she not take care of us in the big ones?

I love this quote from Our Lady of Guadalupe: “Hear and let it penetrate into your heart; let nothing discourage you, nothing depress you. Let nothing alter your heart or your countenance. Also, do not fear any illness or vexation, anxiety or pain. Am I not here who am your Mother? Are you not under my shadow and protection? Am I not your fountain of life? Are you not in the folds of my mantle, in the crossing of my arms? Is there anything else that you need?”

I think we need this powerful reminder in these days of rampant darkness…..that the LIGHT will conquer!

I am sure you have your own “little” answers to prayer that makes you think of the loving Divine Providence that walks with us each day.IMG_3781 IMG_3782IMG_0858IMG_4038A few pictures of dear hubby doing what he likes best…. hanging out and rolling about with the kids and grandchildren. We can never underestimate the power of the dad in a child’s life!IMG_3830 IMG_3839 IMG_3856Most of the following pictures are of just last Sunday….a typical Sunday. The only thing different is that my oldest and very dear brother and his sweet wife are visiting from Canada. They live in a city called Kitimat, which is 500 miles north of Vancouver Island. We are thrilled to have them so we took some photos with my mom and dad…..If you would like to read more about my mom and dad’s move to their new apartment last summer, click  here.

The following is great article on technology.

“
In dealing with the abuses of technology, it is good to have an historical perspective. The abuses of technology began with the Industrial Revolution, which instilled a lust for speed into modern man, and a desire and expectation for immediate gratification. This changed the psychology of man so that people are no longer able to fill idle time with thinking, contemplating, meditating or praying. Technology, which should serve society, came to dominate men’s lives.” Read Six Ways to Deal With the Abuses of Technology

“Dear girls,You don’t know me. I don’t know you.I saw you come in and sit down in front of me, smiling and hugging each other, looking around the sanctuary for familiar faces. During the greeting break you shook my hand, we exchanged a few words; maybe ‘Hello, how are you?’ or ‘What’s your name?’You are all very pretty.  5 Things Happy Couples Do Well

Things are going well, but we’re more like business partners than husband and wife. We keep it together but it’s like we’re hardly even friends anymore.

Life can turn into a grind, even for a great marriage.

Our fast-paced lives are perfectly capable of edging out every good intention we used to have.

Then we find ourselves months (years for many) down the road having survived, but also having missed the reason we thought we were doing all those things in the first place: to love each other and have a wonderful life together.
