2. The grace to be joyful and cheerful, to radiate Christ.
Having shown the crowd His formula for true happiness and peace in the beatitudes, Jesus now urged them to spread the good news to others. They were to be “salt of the earth and light of the world” – to shine so brightly before men that they might see the good works and glorify the Father in Heaven.
He makes it clear to us that we dare not be shy. We dare not hold back and let others do the work. Precious souls are in danger and time is running out!
Dear Master,
You not only remind us of what we should do, but also show us how to do it. Your words are chosen so carefully so we will surely understand.
Salt preserves, salt gives taste and zest to food. And once it ceases to give taste, it is no good. Once the light burns only for itself under a bushel, it is of no worth. It’s worthwhile only when it shines out to others and leads them through the darkness.
Teach me this lesson, my King. I must make virtue attractive by being both virtuous and attractive myself.
In the light of this realization, oh my King, how greatly I have failed at times. So often I am grouchy and irritable. How can that attract?
I often wallow in self-pity – complaining, telling my grievances and showing how I’m neglected. What can that do, my King, except draw disgust for religion?
Oh, teach me to be big, manly; let me absolutely refuse to be hurt or grieved, to complain or feel sorry for myself. Let me be cheerful, friendly, approachable, charitable.
I don’t have to go against my nature. I don’t have to be an extrovert if I’m not one, or clown around if this is not my temperament. My joy can be a quiet kind of joy – but joy it must be! And the joy must shine out! Teach me to smile often, as often as I can.
